When I first started volunteering for the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), I had no idea just how much it would shape my career, my personal growth, and even my global experiences. What started as a commitment to improving massage therapy regulations in Northern California turned into a lifelong journey filled with friendships, professional connections, leadership opportunities, and unforgettable travel experiences.
A Network That Spans the Nation (and beyond)
One of the greatest benefits of volunteering with AMTA has been the incredible network I’ve built over the years. I have decades-long friendships and business partnerships because of my involvement. My national network of massage therapists and industry professionals is invaluable—I can tap into it for advice, opportunities, and collaborations at any time.
When I moved across the country, I found a place to practice in Washington, D.C., simply by reaching out to AMTA members. Once I arrived, I connected with therapists to trade sessions and continue refining my skills. Volunteering didn’t just give me professional benefits; it gave me a built-in support system wherever I went.
Leadership, Organization & Technology Skills
Beyond networking, my time as an AMTA volunteer gave me skills that went far beyond hands-on massage therapy. I developed organization, leadership, and technology skills—skills I never expected to use in the massage therapy field.
Today, I’m attending the AMTA School Summit and speaking on a panel about using technology in the classroom. But I wasn’t always a tech expert. My background was in social work before I became a massage therapist. It was through volunteering that I was exposed to technology, given opportunities to communicate with members, train volunteers, and even co-found a continuing education business with a fellow AMTA member.
Making a Global Impact
Volunteering doesn’t just open doors at home—it can lead to life-changing international opportunities. Thanks to a friendship and professional connection with an AMTA member, I traveled to the Philippines for five weeks to teach local massage therapists how to run a dive resort spa. That experience expanded my perspective on massage therapy worldwide and reinforced just how impactful our work can be.
Advocacy & Elevating the Profession
My volunteering also led me to work on legislation to elevate massage therapy in California. By working alongside passionate professionals, I helped shape policies that directly impacted therapists and their ability to practice.
Every AMTA chapter relies on volunteers to be the public face of the organization, advocate for the profession, and support massage therapists at the local level. AMTA DC, where I’m currently involved, is a small but mighty chapter. We collaborate with other regional chapters and have the full backing of National AMTA staff, allowing us to make a lasting impact in the DC-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) region.
How You Can Get Involved
You don’t have to volunteer as deeply as I did to experience the benefits. Short-term volunteer projects can still open doors, connect you with amazing people, and help you grow as a professional.
Here’s how you can get started:
✅ Reach out to your AMTA state chapter board and ask what they need help with. Share your skill set and interests—they’ll help you find the right fit.
✅ Run for a delegate or board position. This comes with training, travel opportunities, and a chance to connect with AMTA members across the country.
✅ Know that every volunteer role comes with support. Former and current volunteers, AMTA staff, and plenty of online resources are available to guide you.
The Takeaway
Volunteering for AMTA completely transformed my career. It gave me a community, opportunities, and experiences I never could have imagined. If you’re passionate about massage therapy and want to grow professionally and personally, start small and get involved—you never know where it might take you.
Are you ready to take the next step? Contact your local AMTA chapter and see how you can contribute. Trust me—it’s worth it.
