Peaceful Spirit Introduction to Oncology Massage

In this 8-hour class, students will learn the most up-to-date information on safely working with clients as they navigate their cancer journey.

We will dispel the myths related to massage and cancer, discuss indications and contraindications, and develop safe and effective treatment plans. 

We will learn the risks involved when working on cancer patients, such as metastasis, DVT, and lymphedema, and determine when it is safe to treat and when you should refer out. What to ask in your intake forms, how and when to get physician approval, and tips and tricks when it comes to pressure and positioning will also be covered in the class. 

We will also discuss some common side effects of radiation and chemotherapy, and how to utilize massage to help alleviate or reduce symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, nausea, anxiety, and depression associated with cancer treatment. 

At the end of this class, you will have a basic understanding of working with cancer patients, which will help you to determine if further training is something you wish to pursue.

*participants should bring lotion, sheets, 2 pillows with cases and 2 hand towels

Jennifer DiSilvio is a hospice and oncology massage therapist with over a decade of experience working with oncology patients. She is currently a member of the Integrative Medicine Team at Yale New Haven Hospital’s Cancer Center and is an NCBTMB-approved instructor. She has written for Massage Magazine on multiple subjects, including an article on Massage and chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy. She is currently pursuing a master's in clinical social work.
